JUNGLE TRAIL

The jungle surrounding the lodge is lush and full of surprises. Right on our grounds you’ll find a long meandering Jungle Trail. It warrants many visits and photographs.

Monkeys? Oh yes! This little guy is having a bit of breakfast high up in the trees. Sometimes, if you’re lucky and still, their curiosity gets the best of them, and they come closer.
Look carefully. This green lizard is one of many jungle creatures that blends into its surroundings. Take binoculars or a camera into the jungle trails. The slower you go, the more you see.

This Strangler Fig tree is the largest known to the area. Luckily for our guests it is located right on the Turtle Beach Jungle Trail. The ways of the jungle and its inhabitants are strange. The Strangler Fig starts as a little vine growing in a tree. The vine expands around the tree until it covers it fully and strangles it. The Strangler Fig steals its spot in the jungle.
Leaf cutter ants are also an amazing jungle inhabitant. They cut and strip the leaves from a tree, bit by bit, to carry back to their nests to feed their larva. It is amazing to see the width of the trails that those tiny little feet make on all those treks back and forth between tree and nest. It is easy to find them on our Jungle Trail.

Without much sunlight able to penetrate the thick covering of the jungle canopy, colorful flowers don’t often grow there. These are an exception. Their vivid color and distinct pattern cause them to stand out among the more subtle greens and browns.
The jungle is just steps from your room at the lodge. It is a tangle of varieties of life. Return to it time and again. One trail takes you all the way to The Canal of Palms. Each visit will be unique and memorable.
