PRIVATE CANAL

The entrance to Turtle Beach Lodge is a half mile private canal off the Canal of Palms. It was described by a visiting travel agent as, “A million dollar entrance.” It was quite a compliment to the lodge, and it’s really true. Each boating expedition from the lodge takes guests along this canal. What that means for guests is incredible beauty!

The canal was carved out of the jungle about twelve years ago. It took twenty-eight men three months to dig it by hand. Later a dredging machine came to dig the canal deeper, but it was first dug by men to keep a curved natural look, and protect the trees on the banks of the canal as much as possible.
The canal is narrow, and the jungle forms a canopy above it. The effect is the feeling of intimacy with the wild, lush environment. If you pay attention you can hear birds, the sound of mysterious things crashing through the jungle, the splash of Caimans or the comical lizards that run across the water, the crashing waves a short distance away, and a variety of other sounds. You will see a tangle of trees, vines, pale flowers, and often the wildlife that lives along the canal.

A personal note from one visiting writer, who prefers to remain anonymous: “There are a host of things at Turtle Beach Lodge that I enjoy, but my favorite activity is to kayak through the canals, alone or with a friend. The memory of those reflections in the water haunts me until I am able to return to see them again.”
