THE BEACH
| Turtle Beach Lodge has the rare distinction of having both beach and lowland jungle in a single location. On this eastern side of Costa Rica the color at sunrise can be spectacular. Bring your cup of coffee to the beach in the morning, or better yet have a long walk on the beach and take in the view. |

The gardeners at the lodge work hard to clean our wide dark-sand beach of drift wood and ocean debris daily. It can be quite a task considering that at certain times of the year a sea of purple water hyacinths float down the Tortuguero rivers, out to the Caribbean sea, and then wash up on the beaches. |
| There are also many huge fallen hardwood trees from the area that do the same thing all year long. |

A beach free of driftwood and ocean debris is not only more attractive, but is easier for sea turtles to come ashore on, dig their nests, and lay eggs. Baby turtles can also reach the sea faster on a clean beach and therefore escape land predators. |
| It is important to protect the turtles from seeing light at night. Light confuses the turtles, and can cause them to turn back to the sea without laying eggs. Although the lodge has dense foliage as a barrier between beach and gardens, gaps in the plantings provide views of the ocean from the pool complex, the rooms, and other areas of the grounds. When it isn’t turtle season a fire on the beach under a huge sky of stars is a perfect ending to the day. |

The rows of crashing surf along the Caribbean can be wild and is always invigorating. While respecting the power of the ocean, playing in the surf is a favorite among guests. |
| The crash of the waves, the cry of the birds …. these are the natural sounds of the ocean. You can go the whole day without seeing anyone except guests on the beach at Turtle Beach Lodge, but birds and sand crabs will always keep you company. |

The pace at the lodge is as peaceful as you want to make it. After a day of touring Tortuguero, climbing the mountain, or fishing under the tropical sun, a cool drink is perfect in a palm shaded hammock rocked by ocean breezes. |
| The sun sets back behind the grounds of Turtle Beach Lodge where you can’t see it going down. But as long as it isn’t raining the sky is filled with the brilliant colors of sunset and the jungle takes on a golden glow. |
